How to Use Nordic Chic Wax on Furniture
Color, Clarity, and Care
Nordic Chic wax offers a natural, turpentine-free way to protect and enrich painted or stained furniture. Made from natural ingredients, it provides a satin finish, a pleasant aroma, and a safe indoor experience. This guide walks you through using clear wax as a foundation, applying colored wax for depth and patina, and safely removing wax if you ever need to repaint.
Why Nordic Chic wax?
- Natural ingredients — gentle on surfaces and the environment
- No turpentine — safer for indoor use with a mild scent
- Pleasant aroma — enjoyable to work with
- Versatile protection — adds a satin sheen and enhances depth and warmth of colors
Step-by-step guide
1) Surface preparation
- Ensure the furniture is clean and dry.
- If you’ve just finished painting or staining, allow adequate cure time per the product guidelines.
- Lightly sand any rough areas and remove dust.
- Decide on your desired finish: soft satin glow or more matte protection.
2) Clear wax: the foundation
- Apply a thin, even coat of clear wax to the entire piece with a soft, lint-free cloth or a wax brush.
- Work in small sections, following the grain of the wood or surfaces.
- Allow the wax to set briefly.
- Buff with a clean, soft cloth to remove excess and bring out a subtle sheen.
- Why start with clear wax? It preserves the natural tone and creates a neutral base you can tone down or recolor with colored wax later.
3) Colored Nordic Chic wax
- Choose your colored wax and apply a small amount to a buffing cloth or directly to the surface in a controlled manner.
- Work in small sections, blending the color into the clear wax layer. Start light—you can always add more, but it’s harder to remove excess.
- For subtle depth: apply a light layer and promptly wipe off any excess.
- For deeper patina: build color gradually, allowing each layer to set before applying more.
4) Achieving an even color
- Always begin with a thin layer of clear wax, then a light touch of colored wax.
- Work in small, overlapping sections to avoid harsh lines.
- Wipe in the direction of the grain for a natural look.
- If the color is too strong, blend with clear wax or re-wipe to reduce intensity.
5) Removal or tone-down (if needed)
- To repaint or adjust the finish, remove wax with a dedicated wax remover or by buffing with a clean cloth until most wax is lifted.
- For stubborn areas, use a small amount of wax remover or compatible mineral spirits and wipe away, following safety guidelines.
- After removing wax, lightly re-sand if needed and repaint. Reapply wax after painting to seal and protect the new finish.
6) Finishing and maintenance
- Give the piece a final buff after applying wax for your desired sheen.
- Maintain by gentle dusting and periodic re-waxing to refresh protection.
- Avoid harsh cleaners; use a damp cloth for cleaning and dry immediately.
Remember wax is not waterproof - it is only water repellent, so don't leave wet glass etc. on the surface.
